“What are they doing?” Michael asked as he watched the convoy that had stopped down the road.

Randall brought the scope back to his eye and observed the group. Most were dressed in at least some semblance of military garb and it was clear that they had more than enough weapons to handle anything they might run into short of an F-16, though based on the composition of the group he thought it was very likely there were some stinger missiles squirreled away in the back of one of the trucks.

He guessed there were roughly two hundred personnel with an assortment of five ton trucks, pickups and several jeeps.

“They’re setting up a command post,” Randall said wonderingly. “Something must have changed.”

“Changed?” Michael asked.

“It used to be that they wouldn’t do something like that, setting up shop out in the open where they could be hit by some kind of an air strike.” Randall thought about it for a moment. “Government must have either lost their air assets or have powered them way down.”

“Why would they do that?”

“Balance had to shift eventually. Once FPAR got their hands on stingers they became a real problem for everything from drones to helos. They even started taking down jets.”

Indeed, a massive field tent was being erected along the side of the road. Two of the pickup trucks that Randall had observed packing fifty caliber machine guns were now set up on either side of the tent monitoring opposing routes of approach.

“How long do we wait?” Michael asked.

Randall stared at the command post for a moment and then turned back to Michael.

“Not long,” he said. “Like I said, this isn’t our fight. If I’m being honest about it, I don’t even know why I’m still out here.”

“He’s coming,” Jeremiah said from behind them.

Michael and Randall turned back to the road to see a man walking toward them with a squad of fighters behind him, twelve men in total.

“Apostles,” Michael said quietly and then smiled weakly. “Maybe. Number’s right.”

“Unless you count Mary,” Randall said.

Michael turned back to the road and watched intently as this man and his followers grew ever closer. The man was fairly tall, about six foot, and stoutly built. Something about the way he wore his military uniform told Michael that he had worn one before, most likely before the outbreak.

In a way, this man seemed to almost walk in slow motion, like something out of a Quentin Tarantino movie. It brought back memories of that opening scene in Reservoir Dogs, that slow motion intro that grabbed everyone’s attention.

This then caused an absurd line of thought that made Michael wonder if anyone would ever make movies again. His conclusion was that the time of movies was probably concluded. Most likely forever.

The man stopped two dozen feet from them and smiled. It seemed genuine enough, not like the fake smiles so many people had worn as a mask in the former world. Michael remembered the pistol tucked into his waistband. He felt the weight of it, but knew it was of no use.
